The Sculpture is Unveiled!

Keystone Elementary students, teachers, and staff joined community members and families for the long-awaited unveiling of the sculpture created by artist Dave Poulin. Kelly wrote an essay when she was in fourth grade that inspired the design of the sculpture. She was then chosen to model for "Artist Dave" as he developed this piece of art. Kelly is now a sixth grader and proudly participated in the unveiling.

What a beautiful sculpture and great addition to Keystone Elementary that will be enjoyed by our students for years to come!

Living in Harmony with Nature

Our fourth-grade students wrote essays on the topic of "Living in Harmony with Nature." Kelly won the essay contest, and her ideas were used to design our sculpture!

We hope you will enjoy reading some of our students' essays.

4th Graders Interact with Artist Dave

Fourth graders spent some quality time with Artist Dave yesterday as he gave some acting lessons! Students tried to pose, without talking or moving, to dramatize a message.

Dave also introduced a theme-writing contest, and students will write their thoughts on "Living in Harmony with Nature."

Artist Dave's Schedule

Artist Dave will be working directly with fourth grade students tying art, specifically sculpture, with science and math as he meets in their classrooms this week. He will also be starting a theme-writing unit, with the student having the best cumulative idea for our sculpture, using our theme "Living in Harmony with Nature," as our winner. Today the students will be portraying themselves as a sculpture. Artist Dave is giving some acting lessons! Students will pose without talking or moving and try to show a message.

By the end of the day on Thursday, we will have chosen the winner of the theme. That student will be our model for the sculpture! Artist Dave will take photos of our student to use as he sculpts.

On Friday of this week, Artist Dave will go back to his studio in Jamestown, New York, to make the armature for our sculpture.

Next week Artist Dave will be setting up in our front lobby, with benches for our students all around his work area. The art classes will watch him work on a life-size clay sculpture. Teachers, community members and parents are welcome to stop in to see his work. During that week, we will be selling tee shirts with motivational messages straight from our artist. This money will help pay for his residency. Artist Dave will be bringing a pin with a great motivating message on it for every student, teacher and staff member in our building.

It will take our artist two weeks to finish the sculpture. He will leave it here for us to enjoy for about two weeks after its completion. Artist Dave will then come back to pick up the sculpture and transport it to his studio to be bronzed this summer. When he comes back, we will all wear our tee shirts and get some great photos!

Next September, Artist Dave will bring our bronzed sculpture to Keystone, and we will find a special spot to place it and enjoy it for many years to come.
